GRACE’S NOSE WAS BURIED deep in a book about giant sea creatures when Mrs. Mac entered the study.

She drew her attention from the enthralling words and focused on the housekeeper. “What can I do for you, Mrs. Mac?”

“A note delivered for you just now.”

She sat up straighter on the window seat where she had been sprawled and closed her book. “A note?”

“Yes, Mrs. Grace.” She came forward to hand her the envelope. Grace opened it and skimmed the words and then looked up at Mrs. Mac. “I am invited to lunch at the Vandergriffs’ this very afternoon.”

“Some honor that is.”

“Yes,” she said faintly. Was it horrible of her that she just wanted to remain closeted in this study with her book?

Of course, she must go or seem rude. She could not give her new husband a bad name either, at her lack of manners.

She set her book aside and rose. “I will walk to the Vandergriffs’. Is it far?”

“Not at all, Mrs. Grace. A few blocks that way.” She pointed at the wall and the direction she was to walk.

“I won’t be requiring luncheon from you today. Thank you, Mrs. Mac.” Grace went upstairs and put on her best dress again, this time using the few ribbons she had brought from home to tie in her hair and one around her throat. Then on second thought, she reached for a lace shawl her mother had made and draped it over her shoulders.

Looking into the mirror, she decided the dress appeared to be quite transformed, different from the previous day when the ladies had seen her. She had a better chance of not appearing to totally be countrified in her one good dress.

Happy for the moment, she went out of the house and headed to the Vandergriffs’, following Mrs. Mac’s directions and looking out for the grand house with the peony flowers out front.

“In bloom, they are,” Mrs. Mac had told her and pressed a parasol into her hand when she went out the door.

As Grace navigated the city alone, she thought of how far she had come. Heavens, was it only two days ago that she had disembarked from the train and found herself husbandless and without resources in a strange place?

Now she was a married woman, of upstanding reputation and invited to the Vandergriffs’ for luncheon.

What would her dear parents say at these surprising events? They would be happy and at peace, she realized. Though she knew little of her husband, she knew he was not cruel. In fact, he had been quite accommodating in sleeping next to her without making demands of her.

Though the scents of his soap had drifted into her dreams and had her waking with a blush at what had gone on in her mind during her sleeping hours.

Some familiar sights helped her get her bearings, and she knew she was headed in the right direction. When she approached a busy intersection, she turned her head and spotted the sheriff’s office.

If she had the time to spare, she would pay a visit to Brock.
